How has the upheaval in the GDR affected the present? These and other questions will be explored at a new center at the University of Leipzig.

A Center for Comparative GDR and Transformation Research is being established at the University of Leipzig. According to the university, the center is intended to bring together, in an interdisciplinary manner, initiatives focused on research into the 1989 Peaceful Revolution and the GDR itself. The Federal Ministry of Education and Research is funding the center with three million euros.

The new institution brings together existing structures in cultural and social science research and builds on long-standing academic activities. One of its main focuses is to investigate the effects of the upheaval in the GDR on today’s society. An exchange between the academic community and the public is planned.
