What impact will the US tariffs have on the local economy? The Ifo Institute in Dresden has calculated the consequences down to the level of cities and districts. This is the result.

The US tariffs are affecting individual regions in Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia to varying degrees, according to an analysis by the Ifo Institute. According to the analysis, the negative consequences are strongest in the districts of Zwickau, Anhalt-Bitterfeld and Wartburg. Meanwhile, there is also a slightly positive change in gross value added in some places, according to an overview by the researchers. This applies above all to Halle, but also Gera and Suhl.

In the end, it depends on the local economic structure, they said. "While service providers tend to benefit in many places and can gain market share, the losses in the manufacturing industry are serious in some districts," said Robert Lehmann, one of the authors of the study. "Overall, the tariffs could lead to a shift in economic activity from industry to services in the medium term."

Of all the cities, districts and counties in Germany, Salzgitter is suffering the most from the US tariffs. According to calculations by the Ifo branch in Dresden, 1.16 percent of gross value added is lost there. However, there are also beneficiaries - above all Potsdam with a 0.23 percent gain.
