After the occupation of a vacant villa in the east of Leipzig, the police are investigating a woman and a man. The two 25-year-olds were found on the premises on Sunday, according to the police. They are being investigated for trespassing and damage to property.
According to the police, several doors on the premises had been kicked in. Banners were hanging on the façade. No one was left in the building. Up to 80 people gathered in front of the premises for a spontaneous assembly, which remained peaceful according to the police. The occupation became known via social networks on Sunday afternoon.
Signs against Leipzig's housing market
"By opening the Villa Krause, we want to oppose the increasing isolation on the housing market and strengthen neighborhoods," announced the group "Autonomous Occupation Days Leipzig (ABeTa)".
The group also wanted to draw attention to the miserable state of the housing market and the unfair distribution of property. The group proposed childcare and homework help, a free store, regular neighborhood meetings and a self-help workshop as a concept for using the building.
Third squat in one weekend
The group occupied a vacant residential building in the Lindenau district on Friday evening. The police cleared the building on Saturday night and are investigating trespassing. According to the police, up to 70 people took part in a gathering in front of the building.
Another property in the center-northwest is also suspected of being occupied, but officers did not find anyone there during a search. They only found banners on the façade and a damaged skylight, according to the statement.
