The mild spring has given Germany's fruit growers one of the best cherry harvests in years - yields in Saxony also increased significantly compared to the previous year. According to final estimates by the Federal Statistical Office, almost 750 tons of sweet cherries and over 1,800 tons of sour cherries were harvested this year.
Frost had caused an extremely meagre harvest last year: in 2024, only 60 tons of sweet cherries and around 135 tons of sour cherries were harvested. In 2023, 572 tons of sweet cherries and 1,770 tons of sour cherries were harvested, compared to around 760 tons of sweet cherries and 1,700 tons of sour cherries in 2022.
Favourable weather ensures above-average harvest
A total of 47,100 tons of cherries were harvested nationwide. Of these, 79 percent were sweet cherries and 21 percent sour cherries. Unlike in Saxony, where more sour cherries are grown. Compared to the ten-year average for the years 2015 to 2024, the cherry harvest nationwide was 4.2 percent higher.
Compared to the significantly below-average harvest of 35,400 tons of cherries from the previous year, the quantity even increased by a good third (plus 33.1 percent). The reason for the rich harvest was the mild weather during the blossoming period, such as the absence of late frosts, hail or heavy rainfall.
