With the harvest of the first grapes for Federweißen, the Schloss Wackerbarth state winery is heralding the start of this year's grape harvest. The prospects for the 2025 vintage are good, said viticulture manager Till Neumeister.
"This year we had really great growing conditions for the development of the vines. We were spared heavy rainfall events and late frosts, so the vines are currently in really good condition," said Neumeister.
The first grape variety to be harvested was the early-ripening Solaris, which is used for both Federweisser and white wines. Federweisser is a popular specialty - the first grape juice of the year, a must that is still fermenting.
The grape harvest takes around two months
The grape harvest will last around two months, said Neumeister. From the coming weeks, the golden Riesling and the red Frühburgunder will be harvested. According to Neumeister, around 70 varieties are grown in Saxony. The wine region around Radebeul and Meissen is the easternmost wine-growing region in Germany.
