Patience is required: construction work on highways, bridges and train stations is causing detours in Saxony. Where travelers should plan more time - and what should be improved in the long term.

Whether by car or train - travelers in Saxony will need patience in the coming months. Construction work is underway on many routes, and some roads and railways will only be usable to a limited extent, as a survey by Deutsche Presse-Agentur shows. An overview:

Highways

  • A4 near Wilsdruff: road resurfacing until December. Despite construction work, the usual three lanes will remain open in both directions, two of which are marked for trucks. However, the lanes are narrower, so drivers must expect speed limits. The Wilsdruff exit towards Aachen is closed until the end of the year.
  • A4 near Chemnitz: preparatory work is underway between Limbach-Oberfrohna and Chemnitz-Mitte as well as between Glauchau-West and Hohenstein-Ernstthal for later renovations.
  • A4 Königshainer Berge Tunnel: the south tunnel is closed until the end of 2025. Traffic will move in two-way traffic through the north tunnel.
  • A72 near Chemnitz: road resurfacing between Chemnitz-Süd and Chemnitz junction until December. Chemnitz-Süd and Chemnitz-Rottluff junctions temporarily closed.
  • A17 near Pirna: renovation of the Seidewitztal bridge from mid-August to the end of October. Only one lane and a speed limit of 100 km/h will be in place for four kilometers.

Federal and state roads

  • Leipzig: The road surface on the B2 at Messeallee will be renewed until October - a busy section at the exhibition grounds is affected.
  • Torgau: New cycle lanes are being created on Warschauer Straße (B182) and the road surface is being renewed at the same time.
  • Geithain (B7): Road surface to be resurfaced by August.
  • Marienberg (B171): Refurbishment stretches through the local thoroughfare.
  • Aue (B283): Construction work in the middle of the town until spring 2026.
  • Dittersdorf in the Erzgebirgskreis (B180): Road resurfacing west of the town until the end of the year.
  • Görlitz (B6): Bridge on Girbigsdorfer Straße to be repaired.

Rail

  • Dresden: From November 7 to 11, the Dresden Altstadt-Freital Ost line will be closed. Buses will run as a replacement.
  • Leipzig - Dresden: Construction work will be carried out here from mid-September to mid-December. The consequences: Long-distance trains take longer, regional trains do not stop everywhere.
  • Further closures: in October on the Dresden-Klotzsche -Königsbrück and Delitzsch - Bitterfeld lines.
  • Stations: In Görlitz, the platform hall, which is over 100 years old, is being renovated, while in Hoyerswerda a complete renovation for barrier-free access is underway until 2027.

Conclusion

Whether on the freeway, in city centers or on important railroad lines - construction is underway in many places in Saxony. For motorists and rail travelers, this means detours and longer journey times, but in the end the roads and railways should be safer and more efficient.
