Renovation of the Störmthal canal stalls due to money issues

After a conspicuous measured value at the dilapidated Störmthal Canal and initial immediate measures, the Leipzig New Lakeland steering group is pressing for financial clarity for further investigation steps. According to the steering group's office, funding for the in-depth analyses, which form the basis for subsequent remediation planning, has not yet been secured.

During inspections at the beginning of November, a measured value was recorded which, according to experts, indicated possible changes in stability and erosion processes underground. As a result, the assessment of the situation has worsened once again. In response, measurement programs were expanded and protective material such as sandbags were brought in. Concerns about stability are growing

However, further investigations are required to make a long-term decision about the future of the structure. The Steering and Budget Committee and the Regional Redevelopment Advisory Board, among others, will have to decide on the financing of these. The steering group also expects a reliable cost estimate. The committee also reaffirmed that refurbishment and reopening should only take place as part of the basic refurbishment under mining law - the members rejected additional state funding to raise the standard of use.

Graichen: Trust of the region is at stake

Henry Graichen, spokesperson for the steering group and District Administrator of the Leipzig district, said: "Transparent planning, clear responsibilities and binding timelines are crucial for the trust of the region and for the future use of the Leipzig New Lakeland." The aim is "a safe, sustainable and at the same time speedy reopening of the Störmthal Canal and the Canal Park Lock".
