The remediation of the Knappensee lake south of Hoyerswerda is due to be completed in 2030. This was announced by the Saxon Mining Authority on request. It was originally scheduled for completion in 2022. In the meantime, around 90 percent of the banks of the once uncontrolled flooded open-cast mine have been secured.
The lake has been completely closed since 2014. The project has been significantly delayed due to a landslide on the eastern shore. In March 2021, around one million tons of soil fell into the water over a width of around 300 meters. They triggered a high wave that hit the opposite bank so hard that even buildings were destroyed.
