From steam locomotive rides to a railroad flea market: on Rail Day, visitors can experience railroad history, hands-on technology and special anniversaries up close.

Deutsche Bahn is celebrating "Rail Day" with numerous events in Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia from September 19 to 21. Station festivals, special trips and construction site tours will provide unusual insights into the world of railroads, as announced by Deutsche Bahn.

Guided tours and festival mile in Saxony

To mark its 150th anniversary, Pirna station is offering guided tours of the signal box and station on September 20. Chemnitz main station will be transformed into a festival mile to celebrate "200 years of railroads in Europe". Various special trips and a railroad flea market will be on offer, according to the railroad company.

For the first time in many years, round trips will be possible on the Schwarzenberg-Annaberg-Buchholz Süd line of the Erzgebirgsbahn. Steam locomotive rides will start at Leipzig Central Station and those interested can take a look at old locomotives.

Insights into signal box technology in Halle

A family festival will be held at the freight station in Halle and visitors can find out about jobs at DB. Guests can also take a look at maintenance and modern signal box technology.

"Maschinarium" adventure museum in Thuringia

In the Schwarzatal valley, admission to the "Maschinarium" adventure museum of the Thüringer Bergbahn is reportedly free of charge. Here, visitors can see the heart of the mountain railroad, the machine house with drive system, engines and brakes. Children can also ride the mountain railroad for free on September 20.
