Several Saxon streetcar cities and their transport companies are calling for a significant increase in financial support for public transport. Without additional funding from the federal and state governments, there is a threat of noticeable cuts to services and investments, according to a joint appeal by the mayors and transport companies of Dresden, Leipzig, Chemnitz, Görlitz, Plauen and Zwickau.
Such cuts therefore jeopardize the quality of life of citizens as well as climate-neutral mobility and Saxony's attractiveness as a business and tourism location. They are demanding at least 70 million euros from the future state government to compensate for the increase in operating costs and to be able to respond to more passengers if necessary. In addition, a state investment program of at least 200 million euros per year is required to secure modern infrastructure, vehicles and depots.
