Free fruit, vegetables and milk: daycare centers as well as primary and special schools in Saxony can apply for the EU school program again from Wednesday. The application process for the coming school year begins on April 15 and runs until April 21, as announced by the Ministry of Agriculture. The approved institutions will be announced from the beginning of May.
Once approved, the daycare centers and schools will receive two portions of fresh fruit, vegetables and milk per week for each child. Fruit and vegetables are only available to primary and special schools, while milk is also available to nurseries and kindergartens. Participation in the EU school program is intended to promote healthy eating.
According to the ministry, the EU provides the member states with around 221 million euros annually for the program. The distribution of funds is based on the number of six to ten-year-old children in the member states. Saxony will receive around 1.6 million euros from the EU for the coming school year.
