The manufacturer ESMC has received initial approval for the construction of the microchip factory in the north of Dresden. The decision means that the main building with the production and energy supply system as well as the ancillary buildings can be built, as announced by the State Directorate of Saxony (LDS).
Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer (CDU) spoke of another important milestone for the construction of the semiconductor factory. "The largest single investment in Germany is thus making rapid progress as planned," he said in a statement. He described the coordination and cooperation between the company and the approval authorities as exemplary.
Application with more than 5,700 pages
The application for the partial approval was submitted by ESMC at the end of October 2024, according to the LDS. It comprised more than 5,700 pages. "The experts at the regional directorate did an excellent job. The professional cooperation with the developers at ESMC in particular contributed to the speedy process," said Béla Bélafi, President of the State Directorate.
Production to begin in 2027
Preparatory coordination with ESMC for the construction of the factory began in 2023, according to the Saxony State Directorate. The official ground-breaking ceremony for the chip factory took place just over a year ago. The investment of around ten billion euros is a joint project between the Taiwanese industry giant TSMC and Bosch, Infineon and NXP Semiconductor. TSMC is to hold 70 percent of the company, with the other partners each holding ten percent.
The start of production is planned for 2027. The focus is on chips for the automotive industry. The first TSMC factory in Europe will reportedly create 2,000 jobs. The Federal Ministry of Economics is funding the project with five billion euros.
