With a view to the new double budget, the Left Party is campaigning for more money for social housing. According to figures, there is a shortage of more than 11,000 social housing units in Saxony.

The Left Party is calling for more money for social housing in the 2025/26 double budget. "Saxony is a state of tenants: Two thirds of the population live in rented accommodation," explained Juliane Nagel, housing policy spokesperson for the state parliamentary group. Rents are constantly rising, especially in conurbations and surrounding districts, and more so than incomes. This is why funding programs for social and barrier-free housing construction need to be increased.

Since 2017, a good 2,000 new social housing units have been built in Saxony. At least 11,095 more are needed. The Left Party is therefore calling for funding for social housing to be increased by 25 million euros per year - to just under 130 million euros this year and a good 180 million euros next year.

Calls for a debt relief fund for municipal housing companies

The state must also spend more money on barrier-free housing than the state government has earmarked. The Left Party is also in favor of a debt relief fund for municipal housing companies. This should be filled with 25 million euros annually. Nagel: "Many of these companies are still carrying financial burdens today that have their origins in state-owned housing construction in the GDR." This prevents investment and could lead to more apartments being sold to private investors.

The minority government of the CDU and SPD submitted its draft for the 2025/26 double budget to the state parliament at the beginning of April. The coalition is ten votes short of a majority in parliament. It is therefore reliant on support from the opposition. The budget is set to be passed this month.
