Germany must not let itself be run down,” said the CDU politician. Germany must be determined to win in the face of international competition. To do so, costs must be reduced and productivity increased. Volkswagen is part of Germany’s brand identity, Kretschmer emphasized. “If this company gives up, it will be disastrous for our entire country.” “Manager Magazin” had previously reported that the company intends to significantly intensify its cost-cutting measures. Up to 100,000 jobs could be cut worldwide—twice as many as previously planned. According to the report, four plants in Germany are at risk of closure—including, possibly, the facility in Zwickau.
