People in Saxony will have to dig less deep into their pockets for clothing, shoes and fuel in August. In other areas, however, the trend is upwards.

Consumer prices in Saxony remained at a similar level in August as in the previous month. The provisional inflation rate in August was 2.2 percent, according to the State Statistical Office in Kamenz. This is only slightly higher than the July figure (2.1 percent).

Lower prices for clothing and shoes (-1.8 percent) and in the transport sector (-0.8 percent) compared to July offset slight increases in other areas. For example, people in Saxony paid noticeably less for fuel (-2.1 percent).

Food purchases slightly more expensive

The trend for food was slightly upwards (plus 0.1 percent). Price increases were particularly noticeable for edible fats and oils (up 1.4 percent). Fresh fruit (down 2.2 percent) and vegetables (down 1.6 percent) were cheaper than in July.

Drops in the price of private tuition (down 6.6 percent) relieved parents at the start of the school year. Overall, however, costs in the education sector went up, driven by higher fees at privately funded institutions (elementary school: 1.8 percent and secondary schools: 7.8 percent).
