Many people will use Ascension Day for a short trip over the long weekend. A lot of traffic can therefore be expected on local highways. There is a risk of traffic jams on these stretches.

Drivers must be prepared for heavy traffic on freeways in Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia before Ascension Day. Especially on Wednesday afternoon, many commuters are expected to be on the road, according to the Autobahn GmbH des Bundes. Many people will use the public holiday and the following weekend for excursions and short trips. The risk of traffic jams will then increase, especially at roadworks on important commuter and vacation routes.

In central Germany, this will primarily affect the Autobahn 4 near Erfurt, Weimar and Jena, on the border between Thuringia and Saxony, near Dresden and in eastern Saxony near Kodersdorf. Also affected are the A9 between Köselitz and Vockerode and Naumburg and Droyßig, as well as the A72 near Zwickau and in the Vogtland region between Treuen and Reichenbach.

Form emergency lanes in traffic jams

Autobahn GmbH advises travelers to inform themselves in advance about roadworks and closures as well as the current traffic situation. "Remember that you are obliged to form a rescue lane in traffic jams and slow-moving traffic," it continued. This is the only way for the police, fire department and rescue services to reach the scene quickly.

This Sunday, the highways are likely to be much busier again. At the end of the long weekend, many drivers will then start their return journey again.
