Short-time working was not enough: Swiss solar manufacturer Meyer Burger is pulling the emergency brake at its three German subsidiaries.

After years of financial difficulties and, most recently, short-time working, the German subsidiaries of Swiss solar manufacturer Meyer Burger have filed for insolvency with a total of 600 employees.

The Meyer Burger Industries solar cell production facility in Bitterfeld-Wolfen (Saxony-Anhalt) employs 331 people. At Meyer Burger Germany in Hohenstein-Ernstthal (Saxony), 289 people work in mechanical engineering and technology development.

The company, based in Thun, Switzerland, announced that a restructuring to preserve the sites had not yet been successful. "They are now to be continued as part of the proceedings together with a court-appointed provisional insolvency administrator," it said.

The company was actually due to present its business figures for 2024 by 31 May. In light of the ongoing financing discussions regarding the restructuring, the company has applied for an extension of the deadline.

The subsidiaries in Switzerland and the USA are to be retained. Just a few days ago, solar module production in the US state of Arizona, which was still under construction, was discontinued. Production there was planned to use solar cells manufactured in Germany.
