From 2027, new technologies for the circular economy are to be developed in Lusatia. The foundation stone has now been laid.

The construction of the research center for recycling technologies in Lusatia has begun. "Structural change is continuing to gather pace," said State Development Minister Regina Kraushaar (CDU) at the symbolic laying of the foundation stone, according to a statement. The project will bring know-how, investment and new prospects for the people in the region.

The "CircEcon" science center is being built on the Schwarze Pumpe industrial park on the state border with Brandenburg. Strategies for a greenhouse-neutral circular economy are to be developed there. The Technical Universities of Dresden, Chemnitz and Freiberg and the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences are involved.

"The expertise and experience of the four strong universities involved are an asset when it comes to successfully shaping structural change in the region and beyond," said Science Minister Sebastian Gemkow (CDU).

According to Ursula M. Staudinger, Rector of TU Dresden, this unique cooperation will establish a technology network for the development of new materials and production technologies as well as process and recycling technologies that is unique in Europe.

The research center is part of the structural change process in Lusatia. It is due to start operations at the beginning of 2027. The federal and state governments are reportedly investing around 108 million euros.
