Forecast: Saxony in second place for rising heating costs

Consumers in Saxony can expect heating costs to rise significantly. According to calculations by energy service provider Techem, Saxony is one of the federal states most affected by cost increases.

Households with a district heating supply are particularly affected: According to the report, a sample household in the state has to pay around 18 percent more for this than in the previous year. Operators of gas heating systems can expect costs to rise by 14.5 percent. Only in Baden-Württemberg are the cost increases predicted to be even higher than in Saxony.

Cost increases and higher consumption

Operators of oil heating systems in Saxony are also expected to pay more, but will get off relatively lightly, according to Techem. Here, the energy service provider forecasts a cost increase of around 6.8 percent. The background to the rising costs are both higher prices and weather-related increased consumption due to a comparatively cold February and a cold snap in November with frost and snowfall.

The forecast is based on the EU consumer price index and weather data from meteostat.net, which was validated by the German Weather Service. The data was extrapolated for the last few weeks of the year.

In recent weeks, many parts of Germany have experienced icy winter weather with severe frost in some cases. According to the German Weather Service, Christmas days were on average the coldest in 15 years.
