Despite a rainy summer, Saxony's farmers have brought in a good grain harvest. "Our Saxon farmers had a lucky hand," said state farmer president Torsten Krawczyk on the harvest balance in Großschirma (district of Central Saxony). According to data from the State Statistical Office, the average yield of 7.23 tons per hectare was 8.7 percent higher than the previous year. In total, almost 2.65 million tons of grain were harvested (up 12.4 percent).
However, farmers are complaining about falling prices. Grain prices have been falling for more than two years. This trend has intensified once again in recent months, they said. In view of rising costs, arable farming is now loss-making for many farms, Krawczyk stated.
