For many travelers, the journey to their Easter vacation will be a test of nerves. Saxony's freeways are also threatened by long traffic jams and barely usable alternative routes.

Those traveling by car in Saxony at Easter must be prepared for full roads and traffic jams. According to the ADAC, there was already heavy traffic on the highways early on Thursday morning. On the Autobahn 14 near Leipzig, for example, a kilometer-long traffic jam is said to have formed after an accident between a truck and a car. Traffic was also gridlocked on the A4 towards Dresden and on the A72 near Borna and Zwickau.

"Maundy Thursday is traditionally one of the most congested days of the year," said an ADAC spokesperson. It gets particularly tight at roadworks and freeway junctions such as the Dresden triangle (A4/A13) and the Chemnitz junction (A4/A72).

Avoidance often not a solution

According to the ADAC, avoiding the freeways is often of little use. Congestion can quickly build up on rural roads - especially if heavy goods traffic also swerves. "Then it quickly becomes impossible to get through," says the spokesperson.

On Good Friday and Easter Sunday, the ADAC expects traffic to be quieter, but with excursion traffic in the direction of Lusatia, for example. On Easter Monday, the wave of returning travelers will set in - also from Poland heading west. Traffic jams can then be expected again, especially at known bottlenecks.
