Anyone looking for a restaurant or hotel in a new city often turns to Google Maps—and relies on star ratings and reviews. A random sample analysis by the German Press Agency (dpa) of more than 3,700 restaurants and hotels shows that reviews were removed from many profiles following complaints. Google has been displaying a notice about this for several weeks. This also applies to businesses in Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, and Thuringia. Restaurants and hotels in the region handle online reviews in very different ways.
“The importance of Google reviews can hardly be underestimated,” says Professor Steffen Kroschwald, director of the Institute for Consumer Research and Sustainable Consumption (vunk) at Pforzheim University. “Often, the first thing people look at is the star rating, and that plays a decisive role in their decisions.”
