Local transport from Chemnitz to the surrounding area is being further expanded. Specifically, this involves the new line to Limbach-Oberfrohna (Zwickau district). The state directorate has now granted approval for the first construction phase in the Chemnitz city area. Construction is expected to start in February, according to the Central Saxony Transport Association (VMS). Mayor Sven Schulze (SPD) spoke of a "milestone for the continuation of the Chemnitz model".
The aim of this local transport project is to connect the city and surrounding area without the need to change trains. The rail and streetcar networks will be linked together. There are already corresponding lines to Burgstädt, Mittweida, Hainichen, Aue and Stollberg. In addition to the line to Limbach, there are also plans to extend the line to Stollberg via Oelsnitz and St. Egidien and to include connections to Olbernhau and Annaberg-Buchholz.
A route for streetcars and trains
The new construction project to Limbach-Oberfrohna alone is expected to involve investments "in the mid three-digit range", said a VMS spokesperson when asked. The first section will close the ring around the city center and extend the tracks to Konkordiapark. Six new stops will be created in the process. In future, both streetcars operated by Chemnitzer Verkehrs-AG and City-Bahn trains will run on the route. The extension of the line beyond the city center will be the subject of further planning approval procedures, according to the state directorate.
