Suddenly no electricity in the middle of the night: almost 900 households were left in the dark after a transformer house was set on fire. What was behind the crime?

A transformer house in Großkayna, a district of Braunsbedra (Saalekreis), suffered a temporary power outage around the town during the night due to arson. According to a spokeswoman for the grid operator Mitnetz, the substation was shut down as a result. As a result, 14 other grid points were without power. At peak times, 897 electricity customers in Großkayna and parts of Roßbach were affected by the power outage. After just over an hour, most of the stations were supplied with power again thanks to switchovers. According to the company, the last customers were also supplied again in the early morning.

Wood and paper set alight

According to initial findings by the network operator, a ventilation grille at the station was removed and wood and paper were pushed into the station through the opening, which were then set alight. The station had to be completely replaced due to the fire damage.

According to the Halle police station, an employee of the energy company had driven to the substation shortly before midnight due to a fault and noticed the fire at a transformer house. The police began an investigation into arson and disruption of public services. The amount of damage is not yet known.
