"Sterben in Karl-Marx-Stadt" ("Dying in Karl-Marx-Stadt") has been written in large red letters above the Chemnitz Stadthalle since Monday. Since Wednesday, the lettering has been supplemented by the name of the Chemnitz band "Kraftklub" on the currently closed theater in the city. A countdown, which expires on Wednesday evening, suggests a concert by the band.
Agency confirms concert - artist remains secret
The Chemnitz city administration confirmed to the German Press Agency that there will be a concert. The Berlin agency Landstreicher Booking, which is also responsible for concerts by the band Kraftklub, has registered the event with the city. It is a "surprise concert", according to a spokesperson for the agency. According to the spokesperson, it will remain a secret until the evening who will be performing. "People should come in large numbers," said the agency spokesperson.
The Chemnitz band Kraftklub had already played a spontaneous secret concert on the roof of the Chemnitz Stadthalle in 2012, which drew crowds to the city center. The concert on Wednesday will apparently take place in front of the Schauspielhaus. Activists have recently occupied the Schauspielhaus in protest against cultural and social cuts by the federal, state and local authorities. It is currently empty and the planned refurbishment is on hold due to an explosion in costs.
