In view of the debate about the future of Chemnitz Theatre, the five-division theater wants to demonstrate its wide artistic range in the coming season. The city will continue to need fully-fledged theatres and the opera house in the future, emphasized General Director Christoph Dittrich at the presentation of the programme. "Because a theater like ours thrives on the diversity of its disciplines and stages - on the interplay of different artistic forms and perspectives." The 2026/27 season therefore offers major premieres, innovative formats and offerings for all generations.
Different options for the theater are currently being discussed in Chemnitz. The existing building is dilapidated and the cost of renovation has exploded. A new building is being discussed as an alternative. Recently, however, a proposal from the city council caused great uncertainty, according to which the opera and drama stages are to be merged.
