Peter Heilker, currently program and casting director of the Theater an der Wien in Austria, is to become the new artistic director of Oper Leipzig. He is to take up the post on August 1, 2028, the city administration announced. The appointment still has to be confirmed by the city council.
Heilker, who was born in Mühlheim, will succeed Tobias Wolff, who is leaving Leipzig Opera early this summer. Administrative Director Lydia Schubert and General Music Director Ivan Repušić will be in charge of the opera house for two seasons.
Heilker, born in 1972, was chosen by a selection committee. According to the city, he prevailed against 30 competitors. The future opera director has a degree in theater studies. In the past, he has worked as a dramaturge in Munich and as an opera director in St. Gallen in Switzerland.
