The exhibition "Edvard Munch. Angst" in the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz attracted around 84,000 visitors in two and a half months. The show ended on Sunday, according to the city's art collections. On display were 140 works - including around 96 works by Munch himself.
The exhibition was a central item on the program of the European Capital of Culture year, which is now entering its final phase. It is scheduled to close on November 29, the first weekend of Advent.
The art collections on
Theaterplatz had already extended their opening hours at the beginning of the exhibition to accommodate the rush of visitors. They were extended again in the second half of the exhibition.
Powerful and touching
General Director Florence Thurmes explained that the exhibition is one of the most visited at the Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz. Curator Diana Kopka explained the success with several factors: "The biographical traces of Munch in Chemnitz, the combination of works by the Norwegian artist and other artistic positions and, above all, the themes of fear and loneliness, which are portrayed in the works in a haunting and touching way." The
exhibition has hit "a nerve of the times".
