Plauen is starting preparations to host the "Day of the Saxons" in 2027. The Vogtland city has experience in this, said Lord Mayor Steffen Zenner (CDU) at the presentation of initial plans. After all, Plauen had already hosted Saxony's largest folk and club festival in 1997 - exactly 30 years earlier. "It's a big, but also challenging task. But we can handle it."
Fair in June for the first time
There is a new feature at the "Day of the Saxons" in Vogtland this time: it is to take place from June 18 to 20, 2027. For the first time, it will not be celebrated on the first weekend in September, but at the same time as the Plauen Lace Festival.
According to Lord Mayor Zenner, Plauen is also well prepared when it comes to safety. The aim is to maintain the high level of the event.
1.8 million euros in support will come from the Free State, double the previous funding. Following the cancellation of the 2022 folk festival in Frankenberg, Sebnitz 2025 was already able to benefit from the significantly increased funding.
According to Zenner, the town is raising an additional €200,000 itself. Sponsorship concepts and alternative financing models such as crowdfunding are also being examined. In contrast to 1997, the financial outlay for the festival in general and for security in particular has increased significantly, added Lars Krämer, Chief of Staff for the "Day of the Saxons" in Plauen.
Eight stages and festival grounds - focus on "Plauener Spitze"
The city has set up several thematic working groups for the organization, including on safety, traffic, festival design and financing, explained Mayor Zenner. Up to eight stages and a festival area throughout the city center are planned. According to the press office, the "Plauener Spitze" will be a focal point.
In 1997, 380,000 visitors came together. Due to its location in the border triangle of Saxony, Bavaria and Thuringia, the city is expecting a supra-regional rush of visitors this time too, according to Zenner.
The 31st Day of the Saxons follows the venue in Sebnitz. The traditional handover of the baton took place this Monday at the "Fabrik der Fäden" in Plauen. Zenner accepted the baton from the mayor of Sebnitz, Ronald Kretzschmar. State Parliament President Alexander Dierks, who is also President of the "Day of the Saxons" Board of Trustees, emphasized the importance of the festival for the host towns. The effort involved was high, but worth it in the end, said Dierks.
The Day of the Saxons is the largest festival for clubs and associations in the Free State. It has been held since 1992.
