Humor meets high culture: local hero and comedian Olaf Schubert mixes up the audience at the start of the Dresden Music Festival. For one month, everything revolves around the "lightness of being".

For one month, the Dresden Music Festival once again sets the tone. This year, one of the best-known classical music festivals in Europe is once again focusing on much more than just "serious music". Pop, jazz, dance, theater and world music are also represented. The program includes 64 concerts and events until 14 June. Artistic Director Jan Vogler and his team have chosen "Lightness of Being" as their motto.

Moments of lightness needed in difficult times

"Especially in challenging times, it is important to find moments of lightness - music can provide a lot of positive energy here," said the internationally successful cellist and artistic director, explaining the motto. He is looking forward to discovering the lightness of being in all its facets in the concert hall with his colleagues, partners and the audience over the next four weeks.

Dresdner Philharmonie performs opening concert with Olaf Schubert

After the unofficial opening with a performance of Richard Wagner's "Götterdämmerung" on instruments from the time the work was composed in the 19th century, the opening concert on Friday evening will also be humorous. A comedian, Olaf Schubert, has been engaged for the program. Under the direction of Norwegian Tabita Berglund, the Philharmonie will perform works such as the "Oberon" overture and Modest Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition", a true classical hit. Jan Vogler also joins the action as a soloist in Henri Dutilleux's cello concerto.

As a "festival within a festival", Dresden is hosting "Cellomania" for the third time, with around 40 cellists from all over the world performing in 17 concerts over four weeks. The London Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Edward Gardner, is in residence at the festival and will perform works by Edward Elgar on two evenings. The British violinist Nicola Benedetti and Vogler with his cello will also be performing as soloists.

Fresh concept for participatory concert "Dresden sings"

There is a new concept for the traditional "Dresden sings" format. For the first time, the participatory concert will do without choirs and will instead feature the Dresden band Manina on Schlossplatz on May 30. The audience will then be able to sing along to pop songs or dance to them. Even before that, amateur musicians and bands are invited to give a taste of their skills on stages in the city center at the "Klingende Stadt".

The Dresden Music Festival was founded in 1978 and featured stars from the West even before the fall of the Berlin Wall. Under the directorship of Jan Vogler, it has developed into one of the leading festivals in Europe. Every year, around 60,000 visitors come to the concerts, many of which were sold out in advance this year too.
