Magdeburg's short unbeaten run at SC Paderborn is broken. FCM countered Filip Bilbija's first three goals, but were unable to counter his fourth goal.

After three unbeaten games, 1. FC Magdeburg's mini streak has come to an end. In front of 15,000 spectators, the team from the city on the Elbe lost 3:4 (2:3) at SC Paderborn in the 2nd Bundesliga. Lubambo Musonda (25th minute), Mateusz Zukowski (38th) and Laurin Ulrich (59th) scored for FCM, while Filip Bilbija (19th, 29th, 45th +2, 78th) scored four times for Paderborn. With the defeat, FCM slipped to 15th place in the table, but remain ahead of Braunschweig thanks to their better goal difference.

"We were very inattentive when defending, especially in set-piece situations. That's negligent in the situation we're in," said an annoyed FCM coach Petrik Sander, but also emphasized: "You have to take your hat off to the fact that we came back three times and equalised three times."

Filip Bilbija scores three times before the break

Magdeburg started the game with the same starting XI as in the 4-1 win against VfL Bochum the previous week. However, the recently absent Alexander Nollenberger and Philipp Hercher returned to the squad. FCM were similarly patient in their build-up play, but neither team managed to score.

That changed after 19 minutes: Paderborn lifted a free-kick into the penalty area, where the ball bounced off Silas Gnaka at the feet of a Paderborn player - Bilbija dusted it off to take the lead. Magdeburg responded with Musonda's low shot, which caught Paderborn goalkeeper Dennis Seimen on the wrong foot. However, a throw-in found Bilbija again, who scored to give the hosts the lead once more. Zukowski took advantage of a misplaced pass into his feet to equalize again. Bilbija again had the final word in the first half, however, when he headed home a cross from the left.

Ulrich finds the gap - Bilbija scores the final goal

After the break, Paderborn withdrew to their own six-yard box at times and allowed Magdeburg to take control of the game. The visitors looked for gaps in the chains - and Ulrich found one: His shot from 12 meters was deflected decisively. The hosts only became more active again ten minutes after Magdeburg's third equalizer, but without creating any danger. Once again, FCM gave Bilbija of all people too much space - his fourth goal from distance flew past goalkeeper Dominik Reimann. Magdeburg threw everything forward once more, but were unable to equalize for the fourth time.
