Students in Leipzig have to spend more money on a shared room in the summer semester than a year ago. This emerges from a study of the Moses Mendelssohn Institute (MMI) in cooperation with the real estate portal WG-gesucht.de, which was published on Wednesday. Accordingly, a room in the summer semester 2023 costs on average 365 euros - that is 53.50 euros (over 17 percent more) more than a year ago.
According to the data, students nationwide have to pay an average of 458 euros for a room. A year ago, it was still around 414 euros - so prices increased by more than ten percent. Rent is most expensive in Munich (720 euros), followed by Berlin (640 euros). In Erfurt, the rent rose to 352 euros, in Magdeburg to 328 euros. For their survey, MMI and WG-Gesucht evaluated 94 university locations with at least 5000 students. The market observation is accomplished since 2013.
According to the managing director of the Moses Mendelssohn institute, Stefan Brauckmann, the rise is to be led back above all to higher energy costs. He urgently called for additional financial support for students who do not live with their parents. "In more and more cities, it now takes the full salary of a mini-job, 520 euros, to cover housing costs," Brauckmann said. The recently granted energy cost allowance of 200 euros therefore has only a short-term effect for many students.
