Saxony's animal shelters will receive significantly more financial support in future. Funding will increase to two million euros per year.

Saxony's animal shelters are to receive more money in future - with retroactive effect from January 1, 2025. This was decided by the Saxon cabinet, the Ministry of Health and Social Affairs announced.

The annual funding for animal shelters and animal welfare associations will increase from 1.3 million euros to 2i million euros. Half a million euros of this is for investments and 1.5 million euros for running costs.

Animal shelters play an important role in society

This includes the maintenance and care of animals, personnel and energy costs, food and medical care for animals.

Minister Petra Köpping (SPD) wrote: "Animal shelters help where people can no longer or no longer want to take on their responsibility for an animal, e.g. due to a change in life circumstances or because they are overwhelmed with the animal." This is an important social task. The new funding is intended to maintain the broad landscape of animal welfare associations in Saxony,
