A special natural spectacle can currently be seen at Wackerbarth Castle in Radebeul: the flowering of an agave that is about 35 years old. The stem, with several branches and many buds, soars about six meters into the air. The first yellow flowers have been visible since this week. They not only attract many insects but also amaze visitors to the state winery.
The flowering is the highlight of an agave’s life, explains a spokesperson. This is because the plant pours all its energy into the flower and dies afterward. Many agaves would not bloom at all under the local climatic conditions. They are actually native to North and Central America.
According to reports, the buds will gradually open over the coming weeks, so the bloom will remain on display for some time to come. The plant is one of several agaves in the Baroque garden.
