Saxony celebrates 1,100 years of state history with an exhibition

Saxony looks back on 1,000 years of state history and wants to celebrate the anniversary in 2029 with a state exhibition. The detailed concept for the exhibition has now been presented at the venue - Albrechtsburg Castle in Meissen. According to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, it is intended to "address the Saxons' attitude to life and take up Saxon identity and belonging".

"The fundamental question of the exhibition is 'What is actually Saxon?' It examines how Saxony has changed over time and which cultural, political and social influences have shaped the state. Different epochs - from the Middle Ages to the Baroque period and industrialization to the National Socialist era, the GDR and the present day - are thematically linked together," it said.

It's about what holds Saxony together at its core

The Minister of Culture, Barbara Klepsch (CDU), said: "We are talking about 1,100 years of Saxon history, about 1,100 years of life, change, identity - and about what holds Saxony together at its core. The location could hardly be more symbolic: Albrechtsburg Castle in Meissen." The castle is considered the cradle of Saxony. According to Klepsch, it is also about looking to the future.

"History is not made by historical figures, but by the people who shape our state with their very personal stories. That is why it is important to us that the Saxons participate in the participatory project in the run-up to the state exhibition," emphasized the minister. It is set to begin this year.

Citizens can get involved with their own history

Saxons can contribute their own history on social media channels, at events, exhibitions and projects of various kinds throughout the state, the minister continued. "In this way, a great Saxony narrative will be developed by 2029. A narrative of our homeland is being created in which the people themselves have their say with their memories, wishes, dreams and ideas."

For Minister President Michael Kretschmer (CDU), the state exhibition is "more than a cultural highlight and major project - it is above all an opportunity to participate. We want to invite people throughout the state to contribute their view of Saxony and to talk together about what unites us," emphasized the Minister President. Especially in these times, we need places that provide orientation and bring together different perspectives. "The state exhibition can be just such a place."
