More than 90 libraries are participating: During "Buchsommer," teens can not only read but also vote for their favorite book in the reading contest.

For the 15th time, “Buchsommer” is encouraging young people in Saxony to read. The Radeberg City Library kicked off the event with the official opening, according to the Ministry of Culture. According to the announcement, opening ceremonies will gradually take place at additional locations throughout Saxony until the last day of school this coming Friday.

A total of 90 libraries across the state are participating. There, 11- to 16-year-olds can choose reading material for their summer vacation from a selection of current books. For every book read, they receive a stamp in their personal logbook. Anyone who has read three books by the end of summer vacation on August 14 will receive a certificate. In many libraries, “Buchsommer” concludes with a closing party where prizes can be won.

Teens Vote for the Reading Award

Teens also have a say in the “Buchsommer” Reading Award: Participants can choose their favorite book from five titles selected by a youth jury. The youth jury from Grimma presented the nominated titles at the official opening in Radeberg.

“For me, it’s always exciting to see how dedicated the young people on the jury are to their work. Through their book selections and the short films they produced themselves, I learn something new every time about how the younger generation views literature,” said Culture Minister Barbara Klepsch (CDU) in a statement. The Readers’ Choice Award makes “Buchsommer” a true project by young people for young people.
