Up to ten months are planned for the demolition of the western section of the bridge near Leipzig. What does this mean for traffic?

The authorities are planning eight to ten months for the demolition of the western section of the dilapidated Agra Bridge on the Bundesstraße 2 south of Leipzig. This was announced by the State Office for Road Construction and Transport in Dresden. "A longer-term full closure of the B 2 is not expected to be necessary."

The plan is for the approximately 21-metre-long bridge spans to be cut into 10 to 15 individual concrete slabs using a special saw. These should then be lowered in a controlled manner, loaded and transported away.

Why the bridge needs to be replaced

The Agra Bridge on the B2 needs to be demolished due to significant defects. Currently, traffic only flows over the eastern span of the bridge. A weight restriction of 3.5 tons applies. The western section is closed and, according to earlier plans, is to be demolished from 2027.

The bridge was built in 1976 and contains so-called Hennigsdorf prestressing steel - a material that was also used for the collapsed Carola Bridge in Dresden. The B2 is a busy route.
