Saxony's pig farmers are pushing for support to secure the future of domestic meat production. "Our pig farmers are prepared to invest in animal welfare, climate protection and modern barn technology," said Torsten Krawczyk, President of the Saxon State Farmers' Association, at the Saxon Farmers' Day in Weinböhla. "What they can no longer bear are constant new requirements with no economic prospects."
Association: Fewer and fewer pig farmers in Saxony
According to the association, the number of pig farms in Saxony has fallen by around a third since 2015. This is due to investments that have become necessary as a result of stricter requirements, such as animal welfare. Farms have had to convert and in some cases rebuild their stables. If politicians do not take countermeasures, Saxony will lose more farms, warned Krawczyk.
The association criticizes the legal situation for old facilities as disproportionate. In order to reduce bureaucracy, a uniform digital structure is needed to record data on farms and production. At the same time, domestic pig production must be strengthened with clear labeling of origin.
