The Austrian Brenner highway was closed southbound between Innsbruck and the Brenner Pass on Friday due to heavy snowfall. The highway operator Asfinag has not yet announced how long the important traffic route from Germany to Italy will remain closed. According to Asfinag, around 40 centimeters of snow fell within a short space of time on Friday. Trucks had used several lanes of the highway despite the ban on driving and overtaking and then got stuck in the snow. The trucks blocked snow clearing vehicles and other cars, it was said. More than 20 snow clearing vehicles and tow trucks were on the highway.
