In terms of the expansion of the 5G mobile network, Saxony is in third place nationwide in a comparison of the states covering the same area. In July, coverage was 92.5 percent of the state's area, according to figures from the Federal Network Agency. This puts the Free State above the national average of 89 percent. Coverage is best in the city-states - the frontrunner is Bremen, where telecommunications companies reported combined 5G coverage of 99.99 percent. Among the Flächenländer, Schleswig-Holstein leads the way with 96.8 percent, followed by Lower Saxony and Saxony.
The 5G mobile communications standard enables fast downloads of large data packets and near-optimal response times. The fifth generation of mobile communications is important for new applications in industry and for consumers. With the slower radio standard 4G, area coverage in Saxony was most recently 98.7 percent - an increase of 2 points within a year. The extent of so-called white spots - areas that are not supplied with 4G or 5G - has shrunk in Saxony within a year from 2.17 to 1.13 percent.
