The new Mireo S-Bahn trains offer more space—but are too long for some platforms in Halle. Therefore, passengers traveling to Trotha need to be aware of one special circumstance.

Passengers on the new S-Bahn trains between Halle and Leipzig will have to adjust to a peculiarity for the time being: Because several platforms in northern Halle are too short for the new, longer Mireo trains, the rear section of the train will remain closed between Halle Central Station and Halle-Trotha.

This means that passengers heading to that destination should board the front section of the train right away—or, if coming from Leipzig, transfer from the rear to the front section no later than Halle Central Station if they wish to continue on to Halle-Trotha. This was confirmed by Länderbahn. The “Mitteldeutsche Zeitung” had previously reported on this.

Trains Longer Than the Platforms

The new Mireo trains are affected; they have been gradually introduced on the S5/S5X line since mid-June and are scheduled to operate regularly starting with the timetable change in December. Between Halle and Leipzig, they are approximately 140 meters long. The platforms at the Steintorbrücke, Dessauer Brücke, Zoo, Wohnstadt Nord, and Trotha stations are currently not long enough to accommodate this length.

Renovations planned through summer 2028

According to Länderbahn, the transfer arrangement is expected to remain necessary through summer 2028. By then, the platforms at the Trotha and Steintorbrücke stations are to be extended, and new platforms are to be built at Wohnstadt Nord, Zoo, and Dessauer Brücke. According to current plans, the new platform in Halle-Südstadt is not scheduled to be completed until the end of 2028.

Only a few passengers affected

According to Länderbahn, the disruption to daily life has so far been limited. The heaviest passenger traffic is between Halle and Leipzig, the company said. Only a few people continue their journey beyond the main station to the northern stations. Passenger information regarding the transfer plan is to be further improved.
