A small product with great significance: Infineon is launching its new semiconductor factory in Dresden three months ahead of schedule. Politicians view the investment as a signal for Europe.

CDU European affairs expert Oliver Schenk sees Infineon’s new semiconductor plant in Dresden as a positive sign for Europe as an industrial hub. “This factory represents what Europe needs right now: technological strength, industrial substance, and the courage to take strategic future fields into our own hands,” Schenk explained shortly before the production facility’s opening. He added that not only Saxony and Germany would benefit from this, but the entire continent.

Production facility for power semiconductors

The fab is set to begin operations on Thursday as one of Europe’s most modern semiconductor factories—three months ahead of schedule. Infineon invested approximately five billion euros in the project. The Smart Power Fab is receiving approximately one billion euros in public funding, including through the European Chips Act. The factory will create about 1,000 new jobs. Infineon plans to manufacture power semiconductors here that are used in electric vehicles, renewable energy, data centers, and industrial facilities, among other applications.

Europe’s Future Is Tied to Semiconductor Production

“The opening of the Smart Power Fab is far more than just good news for Dresden. It shows that Europe can not only support key technologies, but also develop, produce, and scale them on its own,” Schenk emphasized. The chips manufactured in Dresden are small but of enormous strategic importance. “Anyone who is serious about Europe’s future must talk about semiconductors. And anyone who talks about semiconductors cannot ignore Saxony.”

Europe Must Strengthen Its Industrial Base in Strategic Technologies

“With the European Chips Act, Europe has set itself on the right path. Now it’s crucial to ensure that investments can be made here on a long-term basis: with streamlined procedures, reliable framework conditions, affordable energy, strong research infrastructure, and a well-trained workforce,” the CDU politician emphasized. Especially in light of international competition, geopolitical uncertainties, and global supply chain risks, Europe must further strengthen its industrial base in strategic technologies.
