Helicopter Crashes Near Sehmatal — Pilot Dies

The pilot was killed in a helicopter crash in a forest near Sehmatal in the Ore Mountains, according to the Chemnitz Police Department. The helicopter was being used to apply lime to the forest floor.

Workers managed to pull the man from the crashed helicopter after the impact. However, despite immediate rescue efforts at the scene, he succumbed to his injuries. No details were provided regarding the man’s identity.

Helicopter Caught Fire

The helicopter caught fire. The fire department was able to quickly extinguish it and prevent the flames from spreading. According to District Fire Chief Falko Auerswald, more than 85 firefighters were dispatched because the fire was classified as a major blaze. Finally, one fire truck remained at the scene to secure the area.

Police and the Federal Bureau of Aircraft Accident Investigation are investigating

According to police reports, the helicopter was flying over a forested area near Neudorf, a district of Sehmathal, at the time of the crash. The Chemnitz Police Department was notified of the accident at 9:55 a.m. The Criminal Investigation Division and the Federal Bureau of Aircraft Accident Investigation are investigating the cause of the accident. 

Forest soils are limed to counteract acidification, which results from environmental factors such as acid rain and nitrogen. According to Sachsenforst, the pilot was not an employee of the state-owned company. It was reported that the company works with external firms for liming operations.
