Tourism in Saxony declined last year for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic began. According to the State Statistical Office, lodging establishments recorded approximately 19.7 million overnight stays last year. In each of the two previous years, the figure was approximately 19.9 million overnight stays. The decline was particularly sharp among foreign guests, with a drop of 7.2 percent.
Regionally, the data shows that the largest gains were in the Chemnitz-Zwickau region. Statisticians noted that this was primarily due to Chemnitz being named the 2025 Capital of Culture. The number of people employed in tourism declined by 0.3 percent. As of the reporting date at the end of June 2025, 64,500 people were employed in the tourism sector.
