More forest for Saxony: Why the state government and the Forest Foundation are focusing on reforestation and which regions are particularly in focus.

Together with the Forest Foundation, the state government wants to plant more and more trees in the Free State. So far, more than 30,000 trees have been planted throughout Saxony in more than 20 campaigns since 2022, the state chancellery announced. With a forest cover of just over 28 percent, Saxony is still below the national average and is therefore one of the less forested states in Germany, according to Minister President Michael Kretschmer.

Kretschmer: Trees are a benefit for the climate and biodiversity

"Every tree planted is a measurable benefit for the climate, biodiversity and the people in our state. Our forests are an invaluable part of our homeland and our future," said the CDU Minister President.

Every year brings new challenges, whether from fires or the bark beetle, emphasized Henrik Lindner, Managing Director of the Forest Foundation for Saxony. "Reforestation must succeed above all in areas where the protective functions of the forests are urgently needed." At the moment, the focus is primarily on the Vogtland region, Saxon Switzerland and the fringes of the Gohrischheide forest fire area. A devastating forest fire raged there last year.
