A tiger escapes from a private facility; a rescuer is seriously injured. He is still unable to be interviewed. What will happen to the remaining animals? The authorities are considering their next steps.

The investigation into the escape of a tiger from a private enclosure belonging to a former circus performer near Leipzig is ongoing. The assistant who was seriously injured during the escape nearly five weeks ago is still unable to be questioned, a spokesperson for the Leipzig Public Prosecutor’s Office said in response to an inquiry.

In mid-May, a full-grown male tiger escaped from the enclosure in an industrial park in Dölzig near Highway 9. A 72-year-old assistant to the artist was seriously injured in the incident. Police shot and killed the big cat just a few meters away from an allotment garden complex. The public prosecutor’s office has launched an investigation into negligent bodily injury by omission.

The Saxon Ministry of Social Affairs stated in response to an inquiry from the Left Party faction that the tiger facility had been inspected at least once a year in the past by the North Saxony Food Safety and Veterinary Office. The deficiencies identified during these inspections consistently related to insufficient space for the tigers.

According to the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, an outdoor enclosure of at least 200 square meters must be available for one or two tigers. For each additional adult animal, an additional 100 square meters is required.

Future of the eight other tigers remains unclear

The future of the remaining eight big cats at the facility remains unclear. The former tiger trainer is challenging the district administration’s requirements through an appeal process.

The results of the expedited proceedings must be awaited, the Ministry of Social Affairs further stated in its response to the Left Party faction. “Seizure constitutes a significant infringement on the animal owner’s rights and can only be used as a last resort in this case.” Furthermore, it would then have to be ensured that the seized animals could be housed in a manner appropriate to their species on a permanent basis.
