How did the school react?

After the allegations came to light, the school management stopped the project "immediately" on the first day and terminated the service contract with those responsible for the project. The parents were informed of the termination that very afternoon.

In addition, the school management reported the incident to the school supervisory authority and informed the school board and the Amadeu Antonio Foundation, which supports the project. The foundation, which campaigns for minorities and human rights, has since stopped funding the project, press spokesman Lorenz Blumenthaler told the German Press Agency. Further workshops had been planned. However, from the foundation's point of view, the basis for funding no longer exists.

What did the school and parents know in advance?

The project was reportedly offered to the school by email in January 2026. The project outline from a drama teacher and a student teacher described a project on the topic of "courage", which was to focus on "current political issues" and the personal situation of young people from an "artistic perspective". From the school's point of view, it also offered points of reference in subjects such as ethics, social studies and art.

In light of this, there was "no reason to suspect" that media with potentially pornographic content would be used, the state office stated. The project outline "did not indicate the use of sensitive sexual content". As a result, although the parents were informed about the planned project week in advance, they were just as unclear about its content as the school itself.

What consequences are the school supervisory authority and ministry drawing from the incident?

After its own investigation, the state office does not see any misconduct on the part of the school management or even a violation of the state school law. The project description did not reveal any in-depth sex education, the authority emphasized. The actual implementation on the first day "blatantly" contradicted the previously outlined goals and methods.

The school management had no prior knowledge of the use of pornographic images and the particular focus on the sexual orientation of the young people. In the future, the school inspectorate wants to examine how to deal with external providers together with the Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs, according to an inquiry. Digital marketplaces where providers apply with projects have proven successful. "The advantage for us is that we can check the content of these projects in advance and only then decide whether they can be offered," said LASUB spokesperson Christian Arndt.

What is and isn't allowed in sexual education in the classroom

According to the Saxon Education Act, family and sex education is also part of the educational mandate of schools; it should be "age-appropriate" and familiarize children "with the biological, ethical, cultural and social facts and relationships of human sexuality", according to the "Orientation Framework for Family and Sex Education in Saxon Schools" of the Ministry of Education. Because boys and girls are becoming sexually active at an increasingly early age, the ministry also recommends early education on topics such as infection prevention and contraception in its guidelines.

The guideline also recognizes that boys and girls are being confronted with "almost all facets of sexuality" via the media at an increasingly early age. But one thing is clear: pornographic material, in whatever form, is not part of sex education in the classroom, as LASUB spokesperson Arndt says. Because sexual education is a sensitive topic anyway, the schools usually coordinate the planned content closely with the pupils' parents. If, for example, this conflicts with the religious beliefs of individuals, those affected could be exempted from lessons.

The Saxon orientation framework states that external partners must be selected and briefed in advance so that they are aware of and comply with the requirements. In the case of the school in Schleife, the two people responsible for the theater project did not live up to their responsibility in dealing with children under their care, said Arndt. Following criminal complaints from several parents, the police are now investigating them on suspicion of distributing pornographic content to minors.
