Dentistry Without an Admission Threshold: Eight students have committed to working in rural areas of Saxony for at least ten years after graduation. What’s the story behind the new quota for rural dentists?

For the first time, six women and two men will begin their studies in Saxony this coming winter semester under the state dental quota. By accepting their spots, they have committed to practicing dentistry for at least ten years in a region of Saxony with a shortage of dentists, according to the State Directorate of Saxony. The programs are located in Leipzig and Dresden.

Starting with the 2026/2027 winter semester, the state dental quota will, for the first time, allow for the allocation of dental school spots outside the NC admissions process. A total of 8.1 percent of available spots will be reserved for this purpose.
