From February, cell phones will be taboo in Saxony's elementary school. And Saxony's Minister of Education can imagine a more far-reaching ban.

Saxony's Minister of Education Conrad Clemens considers an extension of the cell phone ban at secondary schools to be conceivable. "Personally, I can imagine a ban on cell phones up to the eighth grade," said the CDU politician in an interview with MDR.

He referred to the considerable effects associated with young people's private smartphone use, such as poor concentration. According to Clemens, there should be fewer private cell phones and more media literacy in schools.

The question of the role of smartphones in secondary schools will be discussed by the minister later in the day at a specialist day on media education in Dresden with experts from academia and teachers.

From February, a ban on cell phones at elementary school comes into force in Saxony. However, such a ban was already in place at many elementary school anyway, Clemens told MDR.
