National team player Lukas Klostermann will remain with Bundesliga club RB Leipzig. As RB sporting director Rouven Schröder announced on Thursday, the 27-year-old has extended his contract with the Saxons until 2028. Klostermann's previous contract, which he signed in 2020, would have expired in the summer. As the defender had hesitated for a long time before signing, there had been speculation about a free transfer after the current season. AC Florence and Eintracht Frankfurt, Leipzig's next opponents on Saturday (3.30pm/Sky), had been mentioned as interested parties.
"We have always emphasized that it is a central and important personnel decision for us to extend Lukas Klostermann's contract for as long as possible," said Schröder. "Lukas is hugely important for our team and for our club because he is simply a very good guy and a reliable player who can be deployed in a variety of ways and has been playing at a high level for years."
Schröder spoke of a lengthy decision-making process, which the deserving defender was allowed to go through. "Of course, there were also considerations as to whether something new would come into question after my long time in Leipzig, so I took my time with my wife and family to think about the next step. And that step for me is now clearly RB Leipzig," said Klostermann.
He moved to Leipzig ten years ago from VfL Bochum and made the leap to international player. Klostermann is highly rated by RB coach Marco Rose, even though he has been repeatedly set back by lengthy injuries. "If he continues on his path here, I'll be delighted," the coach said about Klostermann's future at the training camp in La Manga.
After Yussuf Poulsen and Kevin Kampl, who each extended their contracts until 2026, and Willi Orban (until 2027), Klostermann is now the fourth RB veteran to stay in the Saxon trade fair city.
